Police in Karachi have arrested 15 suspects involved in buying and selling stolen and snatched mobile phones after tampering with their IMEI numbers.

According to reports, the arrests came after targeted operations were simultaneously carried out in the limits of four police stations, namely Khawaja Ajmer Nagri, New Karachi, Taimuria and Gulbahar.

Police also recovered 435 mobile phones, five computers and seven advanced laptops from the suspects who, officials said, used to change the digital identity of the stolen devices.

The suspects were also involved in “patching” non-PTA phones as well as phones blocked over unpaid instalments.

While police are tracing the original owners through recovered phones’ data, further probe is underway.
