A 17-year-old boy has been killed and another teenager injured after a speeding dumper ran them over near Korangi No. 3 in Karachi on Monday, triggering protests and tensions in the area.
The teenager died at the scene, while the injured boy was taken for medical treatment, according to initial reports.
The incident prompted a large gathering of residents, who stopped other dumpers from travelling through the area.
Police said tensions intensified when some people in the crowd attempted to set the dumper involved in the accident on fire.
Officers intervened to prevent the situation from escalating.
Korangi police reached the site and removed the dumper driver from the crowd after residents attempted to attack him.
The driver was taken to the police station for questioning, police officials said.
According to police officials, the crowd had attempted to attack the driver and set both him and the dumper on fire.
Officers also detained the driver of another dumper during efforts to control the situation, according to police.
More than 2,000 people later gathered outside the victim’s residence, prompting authorities to deploy additional police personnel to the area to maintain order.
The accident comes amid recurring concerns over the movement of heavy vehicles through densely populated parts of Karachi, although officials did not provide further details about the circumstances leading to Monday’s collision.
