An 18-year-old woman was allegedly killed by her brothers in Mirpurkhas after they objected to her frequent use of mobile phone, police said, adding that four suspects, including the victim’s two brothers, had been arrested.

According to police, the victim, identified as Anusha, was killed in the Satellite Town area of Mirpurkhas.

They said the family had tried to present the incident as a case of suicide before the investigation led to arrests, adding that the suspects have confessed to the crime.

One of the arrested brothers told police that Anusha used her mobile phone frequently and claimed he killed her in a fit of rage over it. Police cited the suspect’s statement while outlining the preliminary findings of the investigation.

Authorities said the case remains under investigation, and legal proceedings against the suspects are under way.

The incident is the latest in a series of reported cases of violence against women that have renewed public concern over gender-based abuse and so-called “honour”-related crimes in the country.

The cases have renewed calls for stricter enforcement of laws protecting women and greater accountability for perpetrators.
