England have been bowled out for 409 on day three of the opening Test against Pakistan at Headingley, Leeds, taking a first-innings lead of 238 runs.
England resumed the day on 366 for 8 but were dismissed in 89.4 overs, with Jofra Archer contributing 23 down the order.
Four England batters passed fifty in the innings. Jordan Cox made 73 on his Test debut at number three, captain Joe Root scored 66, and Dan Lawrence added 51. Harry Brook top-scored with 91, falling short of a century at his home ground for the second summer running after also making 99 against India at Headingley last year.
Pakistan’s left-arm spinner Ali Usman finished with figures of 5 for 92, becoming the first visiting spinner to take a five-wicket haul at Headingley since Australia’s Ashley Mallett in 1972.
Pakistan had been bowled out for 171 in their first innings on day one. Ollie Robinson and Josh Tongue took five wickets each, with Robinson striking with the first ball of the match.
Pakistan lost their last eight wickets for just 74 runs after Abdullah Shafique made 61 and put on 91 for the third wicket with Imam-ul-Haq, who scored 42.
