The Punjab Education Department has decided to initiate action against 41 government schools in Lahore after fewer than one in five Grade 9 students passed the annual examinations, according to reports.
Show-cause notices, which require recipients to explain their performance before further action is considered, will be issued to the heads and relevant teachers of the schools.
The department will review the performance of school heads, teachers and other officials linked to the schools before deciding what action should be taken, according to reports.
Government High School Wasanpura recorded no successful candidates in the Grade 9 examination, while 27 other government schools in Lahore had fewer than 10 students passing, according to Education Department data.
Officials added that the department would examine the reasons for the poor results and assess the performance of those responsible for teaching and managing the schools.
The move follows concerns over weak academic performance in government schools and is intended to improve educational standards, raise students’ examination results and establish responsibility for poor outcomes, officials said.
Education Department statistics show that the issue extends beyond Lahore, with nearly 2,200 government schools across Punjab recording Grade 9 pass rates of less than 20 percent.
Officials stated that the department would assess the factors contributing to the low pass rates before determining the next course of action.
The action against the Lahore schools is expected to initially focus on seeking explanations from those responsible for the results, with the performance review to determine whether further measures are warranted.
