A five-year-old girl who had accompanied her father to Friday prayers in Tando Adam was allegedly raped and killed, with police saying the suspect arrested in connection with the case has confessed to the crime.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sanghar said the arrested suspect admitted to sexually assaulting the child before killing her.
Police said the girl died after a piece of paper was forced into her mouth. The suspect allegedly left her body near the gate of a madrasa before fleeing the scene, police added.
According to police, the child had arrived at the madrasa with her father to attend Friday prayers but went missing shortly afterwards.
Police said an investigation was launched following her disappearance, leading to the arrest of a suspect. SSP Sanghar said the suspect’s confession was recorded during the investigation.
The case is the latest in a series of reported sexual assault cases involving children in the country.
Days earlier, police in Mandi Bahauddin arrested a man for allegedly sexually abusing a nine-month-old girl at an outhouse in the Sohawa Bolani area.
The girl’s father, Younis, who works for a local landlord, told police that the suspect, identified as JS and a resident of Rajanpur, allegedly assaulted his daughter at his house while the child’s mother was at work.
According to the complaint, the suspect fled after the girl’s mother returned home, leaving the baby injured.
Police registered a case against the suspect under Section 376(iii) of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC), which deals with rape of a child, and said an investigation was underway.
