Police in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s (KP) Swabi district have arrested a 70-year-old man for allegedly attempting to marry a 14-year-old deaf girl who is also unable to speak.

Police arrested the man on Tuesday after receiving information about the planned marriage at a house in Jaganat village, within the jurisdiction of Chota Lahor City police station.

An FIR [First Information Report] was registered against the suspect, officials said.

DSP Chota Lahor Fazal Sher Khan confirmed that police had also launched an investigation after receiving information from the girl’s mother.

According to the officer, lady constables visited the family’s home after learning about the planned marriage. The girl’s mother then narrated the circumstances to the officers, he said.

“The police acted after getting information about the marriage,” Khan said.

The suspect was identified as Habibur Rehman, a resident of Chota Lahor city.

Khan said investigators are also taking legal action against other people allegedly involved in facilitating the proposed marriage.

During the initial investigation, Rehman confessed that he intended to marry the girl.

Officials also said the case remains under investigation, as police examine the circumstances surrounding the proposed marriage and the involvement of others allegedly linked to it.
