An elderly man died in Faisalabad after suffering a heart attack at the Ghulam Muhammad Abad police station on Wednesday, where he had gone to pursue a complaint about his ten-year-old granddaughter being harassed.
The victim, identified as 70-year-old Zulfiqar, a resident of Rasool Nagar, had earlier attended an open public hearing held by the Regional Police Officer (RPO) alongside his daughter Sana Gulshan. The RPO referred the harassment complaint to the Ghulam Muhammad Abad police station for further legal proceedings.
Trouble started inside the station when the victim met the Investigating Officer (IO), Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Raza Abbas. Zulfiqar’s family alleged that the officer mistreated the victim, his daughter, and the young girl.
Family members claimed that ASI Raza Abbas behaved in an insulting and inappropriate manner toward them during the meeting. They further stated that the investigating officer attempted to pressure the family, in collusion with the accused.
According to the family, the emotional distress caused by the officer’s conduct led to Zulfiqar collapsing from a heart attack on the spot. Rescuers shifted the victim to Ghulam Muhammad Abad General Hospital, where attending doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.
Following the death, relatives brought the body out to the main road and staged a protest directly outside the Ghulam Muhammad Abad police station. Demonstrators blocked the road for several hours, chanting slogans against police highhandedness and demanding immediate departmental and legal action against ASI Raza Abbas.
Police teams led by Station House Officer (SHO) Yousaf Shehzad arrived at the scene to initiate talks with the grieving family. Officials later confirmed that police took the main suspect into custody and registered a formal case regarding the initial harassment complaint.
