Actress Aymen Saleem has joined the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), saying that former prime minister Benazir Bhutto has inspired her since childhood.

Speaking at a media briefing, Saleem said she felt proud to become part of the party. She hopes to use her education and abilities to serve Pakistan and its people.

Saleem has long admired Bhutto’s political journey and achievements, and that admiration shaped her decision. Bhutto made history as the first woman to become prime minister of the country.

“Actually, I was inspired by her [Benazir Bhutto], which is why I joined the Pakistan Peoples Party today, with the hope that I would get a platform where I could use a little bit of my education and whatever capabilities I have to do something better for the people of the country.”

She made clear that she is not chasing a high office. “Becoming an MNA or a senator comes later,” Saleem stressed. “First, I wanted a platform through which I could work for the people of my country. Today, I have gotten that platform, and I am very happy about it,” she said. “It’s a matter of great joy for me.”

Saleem described the move as a commitment to Pakistan and its people, not only a political decision. She plans to make every possible effort to help others and bring meaningful change to society.

She sees her entry into politics as a first step. “What happens next, InshAllah, as I get the opportunity to work, this is just a beginning for me,” Saleem noted. “I have to go a long way ahead.”

Saleem made her acting debut in Hum TV’s Ramadan special Chupke Chupke, where she played Ramisha, known as Mishi. She received a best actress in a debut role award for the performance.

In July 2021, she announced on Instagram that she would no longer act. She returned to television in 2022 with another Ramadan drama, Paristan, playing Pernia.

Saleem is the daughter of former Pakistan cricketer and wicketkeeper Saleem Yousuf.
