Security forces stopped an attempt by terrorists to cross into Kurram from Afghanistan, responding to firing by the Afghan Taliban on Pakistani border posts, security officials said on Tuesday.
Reports quoted sources as saying that the terrorists attempted to enter Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP)’s Kurram district from Afghanistan’s Nangarhar and Paktia provinces.
The sources identified the group as Fitna al-Khawarij, the term used by the state for the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).
After security forces stopped the attempted infiltration, the Afghan Taliban opened fire on Pakistani check posts along the border, the reposts said. They described the firing as unprovoked.
Pakistani troops responded by targeting several Afghan Taliban check posts and defensive positions, the sources added.
The retaliation forced several Afghan Taliban operatives to leave their positions.
Security forces continued to monitor the situation along the border and remained ready to respond to any further aggression, the sources said.
Pakistan has faced a rise in terrorist attacks since the Afghan Taliban returned to power in Kabul in 2021.
