Armed men stole Rs6.5 million from an Edhi Foundation centre in Karachi, money that had been withdrawn to pay salaries to the charity’s volunteers.

The robbery took place at the charity’s centre in Sohrab Goth on Friday, according to Saad Edhi, a member of the foundation and grandson of its late founder Abdul Sattar Edhi.

Edhi said staff had brought the cash to the centre after withdrawing it from a bank for distribution as volunteer salaries.

Four armed men entered the facility soon after and took the money, he told media. “The men came and they knew exactly who had the money, where it was kept and what the situation was.”

“They had precise information. The Edhi Sohrab Goth centre is a very large facility but they knew exactly where they had to go,” he added.

The foundation also released CCTV footage showing three of the men entering the centre with their faces covered and bearing arms.

Edhi did not say who may have provided the robbers with information about the cash or whether anyone had been arrested in connection with the incident.

The Edhi Foundation operates a large volunteer ambulance network across Pakistan and provides a range of social and emergency services, including healthcare, shelter and care for orphaned children.

Founded by Abdul Sattar Edhi, the charity has become one of Pakistan’s most prominent humanitarian organisations, with its services extending to disaster relief as well as emergency medical assistance.
