The federal government has approved the deployment of three companies of the Pakistan Army in Rawalpindi for security duties following a request from the Punjab government, according to a notification issued by the Ministry of Interior and Narcotics Control.

The deployment has been authorised under Article 245 of the Constitution, which allows the armed forces to assist civilian authorities in maintaining law and order when requested.

According to the notification, the Punjab Home Department sought the deployment through a letter dated July 22, 2026.

The federal government subsequently approved the request with immediate effect.

The three army companies will perform sensitive security duties aimed at preventing undesirable incidents and assisting authorities in responding to unforeseen circumstances, the notification said.

The deployment will remain in place for six months and will operate as required by the Rawalpindi district administration.

Under the arrangement, the army will assist the district administration with maintaining law and order and strengthening security measures at sensitive locations and key routes.

The notification said that the deployment will provide the district administration with additional support to respond to any untoward situation and reinforce security arrangements when required.

The decision comes amid heightened security concerns in Rawalpindi.

The notification did not specify any particular incident as the reason for the six-month deployment.
