Pakistan’s military leadership has warned that any attempt to create unrest or a situation resembling the May 9, 2023 violence would be met with decisive force and the rule of law, without discrimination or hesitation.

The warning was issued during a Corps Commanders’ Conference in Rawalpindi, chaired by Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, according to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).

The forum stressed that internal stability was crucial for Pakistan and said efforts to counter terrorism must include dismantling the “terror-crime nexus” involving elements operating under the patronage of vested interests.

It also called for stronger people-centred governance at the grassroots level, public engagement and improved police capacity.

The conference reviewed the prevailing security situation and expressed satisfaction over intelligence-based counter-terrorism operations by law enforcement agencies.

It called for such operations to be complemented by non-kinetic measures, meaning steps other than direct military action, under the National Action Plan and Vision Azm-e-Istehkam.

On Afghanistan, the forum reaffirmed Pakistan’s right to conduct targeted actions in self-defence against terrorism emanating from Afghan territory.

It held what it described as the “delusional” Taliban leadership responsible for the consequences of facilitating terrorism on behalf of India.

The conference also condemned Houthi attacks against Saudi Arabia, expressed solidarity with the kingdom and reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to the security and sanctity of the Haramain Sharifain.

It welcomed the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye, describing it as contributing to longstanding strategic and collective defence ties.

The forum reiterated Pakistan’s position on the Kashmir dispute, calling for its resolution in accordance with relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.

In his concluding remarks, Field Marshal Munir commended military formations for their operational preparedness and professionalism.

He directed commanders to strengthen Intelligence-Based Operations (IBOs)and improve combat capabilities through modern technology, training and multi-domain integration.
