Police have confirmed new details in the murder of three-year-old Kulsoom in Karachi’s Quaidabad area, with the child’s paternal aunt, identified as Sakina, confessing to the crime and disclosing the motive behind the killing.
According to police sources, Sakina admitted during interrogation that she killed her niece after repeated disputes among the children of two brothers created tensions within the family.
Investigators said that Sakina killed Kulsoom and placed her body inside a sack before calling her own brother Nadir and asking him to dispose of it. Instead of taking the body to a distant location, Nadir left the sack at the entrance of the house, police said, adding that he had already confessed to his role.
The suspects have claimed during interrogation that no sexual assault took place before the murder, contradicting findings from the police surgeon such as physical evidence described as “strongly suggestive of violent rape” and the body bearing “multiple marks of resistance”.
Police said that forensic investigations into this discrepancy were ongoing and they had suspected from the outset that someone close to the family was involved in the killing.
Earlier, more than 50 people underwent DNA testing during the investigation, which was completed within 25 days.
Both suspects, including Sakina, are expected to be produced before a court, where police will seek their physical remand for further investigation, the case had first come to light when the three-year-old’s body was found stuffed inside a gunny bag outside her home in Muslimabad Colony.
She had stepped out to play and did not return. Her grandfather had discovered the body later in the evening.
