Danish Kaneria is the former Pakistani cricketer. He has always been a name associated with spin bowling. But his career was overshadowed by allegations of discrimination and ill-treatment that he faced, both on and off the field. One of the most shocking revelations from Kaneria’s career came when he spoke about the intense pressure he received from former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi to convert to Islam. According to Kaneria, this pressure led to significant challenges in his career, leaving him feeling alienated and disrespected in the Pakistan cricket team.

Kaneria, the only Hindu cricketer to have played for Pakistan internationally, has faced much hardship over the years. His career began with great promise but was marred by controversies, including corruption charges that led to his untimely exit from the cricket scene. However, his personal experiences with discrimination have caused him the most pain.

Danish Kaneria’s Career and Struggles

Danish Kaneria was a talented leg-spinner representing Pakistan in 61 Tests and 18 One-Day Internationals (ODIs). His cricketing skills earned him a place in history, and his best performances came after 2004. Kaneria was mainly known for his ability to trouble even the most renowned batters, including Sri Lankan and Indian players, who were known for handling spin well. He finished his career with 276 wickets, including 261 in Tests and 15 in ODIs.

Corruption charges cut Kaneria's promising cricket career short despite his impressive record. After leaving cricket, Kaneria moved to the United States, where he now resides. He is only the second Hindu cricketer, after Anil Dalpat, to play for Pakistan.

Discrimination and Ill-Treatment

In a recent Congressional briefing in Washington, DC, Danish Kaneria opened up about the discrimination he faced throughout his cricketing career in Pakistan. He shared his painful experiences, revealing how he was mistreated because of his Hindu background. Kaneria mentioned that the ill-treatment led to his career being "destroyed" and ultimately forced him to settle in the United States.

Kaneria's revelation highlighted how the lack of respect and equal treatment hindered his growth as a cricketer. Despite his accomplishments, he was not given the recognition he deserved in Pakistan. He stated, "I did not receive the respect and equal value I deserved in Pakistan. Because of this discrimination, I am in the US today."

The Pressure to Convert: Shahid Afridi’s Role

The most disturbing part of Kaneria’s revelations was his discussion of Shahid Afridi's attempts to pressure him into converting to Islam. Kaneria has claimed that Afridi was the main person who continuously pushed him to embrace Islam during his time on the Pakistani team. According to Kaneria, this pressure was not only intrusive but also affected his relationship with other players.

Kaneria revealed that many of his teammates, including Afridi, made him feel isolated. "Shahid Afridi was the main person telling me to convert, and he did a lot of times. Inzamam-ul-Haq never used to talk that way," Kaneria shared in an interview with Aaj Tak. The lack of support from his fellow teammates, except for Inzamam-ul-Haq and Shoaib Akhtar, made Kaneria's situation even more difficult.

Kaneria's struggle wasn’t just about the pressure to convert. He also faced social exclusion. He mentioned that many teammates refused to eat with him, further isolating him from the team. The lack of camaraderie and respect significantly impacted Kaneria’s mental health and his career trajectory.

Inzamam-ul-Haq: A Rare Supporter

While Kaneria faced discrimination from many of his teammates, he was fortunate enough to find support from a few. At one point, Inzamam-ul-Haq, the captain of Pakistan, stood by Kaneria during these trying times. Kaneria expressed his gratitude for Inzamam’s support, stating that the former captain was the only one who treated him with respect and did not pressure him regarding his faith.

Kaneria admires Inzamam, and he continues to appreciate the compassion and understanding Inzamam showed him when others did not.

Life After Cricket

Today, Danish Kaneria lives in the United States. While his cricket career may have ended prematurely due to corruption charges and discriminatory treatment, he remains vocal about the challenges that minorities in Pakistan face. In the US, Kaneria has continued to speak out on behalf of minorities and raise awareness about their issues.

Kaneria’s story reminds us of the challenges that many individuals, particularly minorities, endure in their professional lives. His courage in speaking out about the discrimination he faced provides hope for those facing similar struggles.

The Bottom Line

Danish Kaneria’s career was cut short. However, his voice continues to echo in the cricketing world and beyond. His brave revelation about the pressure he faced from Shahid Afridi to convert to Islam sheds light on the harsh realities of being a minority in Pakistan. Despite his adversity, Kaneria’s resilience is a testament to his character. His story continues to inspire many who face discrimination and mistreatment.
