LAHORE: In a bold and much-needed move, Punjab University (PU) has taken strict action against illegal occupants in its hostels. The university administration, in collaboration with local police, launched a large-scale operation that cleared hundreds of rooms being used without legal permission. This step has freed up space for 600 deserving morning students who were previously deprived of hostel accommodation.

This decisive move by Punjab University marks a major step towards maintaining discipline and fairness within its hostels. Here's everything you need to know about this development.

What Triggered the Eviction Drive?

According to a press release issued by the Punjab University spokesperson, this action was taken under the guidance of Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Muhammad Ali. The primary aim was to address the rising complaints about illegal occupancy in hostels, which was preventing legitimate students, especially those from remote areas, from getting a place to stay.

The administration had received reports that several hostel rooms were being illegally occupied by non-students, with support from certain student organisations. These occupants were not only using university resources without paying, but also engaging in illegal activities inside the hostels.

What Was Found During the Operation?

The operation revealed a concerning situation. During the raid, authorities discovered:

  • Alcohol and ice (drugs) in several rooms.

  • The illegal use of electrical appliances like inverter ACs, heaters, and irons without paying any charges.

  • Evidence that certain student organisations were collecting monthly rent from illegal residents.

The presence of such substances and misuse of facilities not only violated university rules but also posed a serious threat to the safety and learning environment of genuine students.

Financial Loss to Punjab University

The illegal occupancy was also causing a massive financial burden on Punjab University. The spokesperson revealed that:

  • The university was losing over Rs. 20 million every year in unpaid residential dues.

  • Illegal occupants used resources freely without any billing or permission.

  • The misuse of electricity and facilities further added to the costs.

By removing these unauthorised users, PU aims to save funds and redirect them toward improving student services.

Hostel Allotments for Deserving Students

Thanks to this operation, the university has now successfully:

  • Allotted rooms to 300 morning students who were earlier deprived of hostel space.

  • Plans to allot rooms to another 300 students this week, especially those coming from remote areas of Pakistan.

In an extraordinary step, the hostel offices are working even on weekends to speed up the allotment process. This reflects the administration’s seriousness in solving the hostel crisis.

What About the Student Organisations?

According to the PU spokesperson, some student organisations had turned the hostels into power centers. These groups:

  • Supported illegal residents for their own gains.

  • Collected unofficial monthly rents from these occupants.

  • Tried to create resistance against the university's operation.

However, the PU administration has made it clear:

“There will be no compromise on merit and law enforcement.”

The university has also emphasized that it supports positive student activities, but won't tolerate any illegal practices.

Students Involved Will Get a Fair Chance

Despite the seriousness of the operation, PU clarified that all students involved in illegal activities will be given a fair chance to defend themselves.

The university’s legal team and disciplinary committees are reviewing each case individually to ensure no injustice is done.

Why This Move Matters for Punjab University

This eviction drive is more than just a clean-up—it’s a major reset for the Punjab University hostel system. Here's why it’s so important:

  • It restores discipline and order in university hostels.

  • It ensures that deserving students get equal opportunities.

  • It stops the misuse of university resources, saving millions.

  • It sends a strong message that rules apply to everyone equally.

PU Offers Some of the Cheapest Hostel Facilities

One important point highlighted by the PU spokesperson is the affordability of the hostel system. A student only pays around Rs. 2,000 per month, making it one of the cheapest hostel options in the country.

Given this, the misuse of the system by illegal occupants was not only unfair but also robbed genuine students of a basic facility.

What’s Next for Punjab University?

Going forward, Punjab University plans to:

  • Maintain strict monitoring of hostel allotments.

  • Continue action against illegal practices.

  • Encourage healthy student activities and discipline.

The university is committed to making sure that hostels remain a safe, affordable, and accessible place for students who deserve it.

Final Thoughts

The eviction of illegal occupants from Punjab University hostels is a long-overdue move that benefits real students and saves valuable resources. With strong leadership and law enforcement, PU is aiming to create a fair, safe, and focused environment for academic growth.
