The Los Angeles Lakers have moved to address their center position, signing free agent Alex Len on Tuesday afternoon. The signing comes after a trade for Mark Williams, which was meant to bolster the Lakers' frontcourt, fell through recently.

Initially, Alex Len was set to join the Indiana Pacers, but after the Lakers' trade for Williams collapsed, he decided to reverse course and sign with the Lakers. The team’s need for additional depth at center became even more pressing after they traded Anthony Davis to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for star player Luka Dončić ahead of the deadline.

What Led to the Mark Williams Trade Collapse?

The Lakers had initially struck a deal to acquire Mark Williams from the Charlotte Hornets. In exchange for Williams, the trade would have sent rookie Dalton Knecht, Cam Reddish, and a pair of draft picks to Charlotte. However, this deal was rescinded after Williams failed his physical exam on Saturday.

While the exact reasons for his failed physical are unclear, multiple issues were reported to have been discovered during the evaluation. Williams has struggled with injuries throughout his career, missing nearly 60% of possible games during his three seasons with the Hornets. He has appeared in only 23 games this season due to ongoing foot problems. The Hornets are now in the process of disputing the failed physical.

Alex Len's Role with the Lakers

With the collapse of the Mark Williams trade, the Lakers turned to Alex Len, who will now step in to provide the team with much-needed size and depth at center. After trading away Davis, the Lakers were left with only Jaxson Hayes as their primary center. The Lakers have waived Christian Wood to make room for Alex Len on the roster.

Alex Len has had a relatively quiet season so far, averaging 1.4 points and 1.8 rebounds per game in just over seven minutes of action for the Sacramento Kings. Earlier this month, Len was traded to the Washington Wizards but was waived, allowing him to sign with another team. Despite his limited playing time, his size and experience will be valuable to the Lakers, especially as they look to avoid relying solely on small-ball tactics for the rest of the season.

While Mark Williams would have been a better fit for the Lakers, especially alongside Luka Dončić, Alex Len will provide significant depth and size down low. His presence will help the Lakers with their frontcourt depth as they continue to push for a strong finish to the season.

Lakers' Recent Success and Looking Ahead

The signing of Alex Len comes at a crucial time for the Lakers, who are riding a six-game win streak, including a dominant performance over the Utah Jazz in Dončić’s debut on Monday night. The Lakers’ current record stands at 32-19, and they are looking to continue their strong play heading into the All-Star break.

While Alex Len may not have had the same impact as Mark Williams, his signing provides the Lakers with the stability they need in the frontcourt as they move forward in the season. The Lakers will face the Jazz again on Wednesday night in their final game before the All-Star break, and with the addition of Alex Len, they will look to extend their win streak and continue to build momentum.
