In a surprising development, popular Malayalam rapper Vedan has been arrested by the Hill Palace police after ganja was allegedly seized from his apartment in Kochi. The incident occurred on Monday, April 28, 2025. Along with him, eight others were also arrested from the exact location.

This arrest has sparked discussions across social media platforms and within Kerala’s music industry. Fans and followers of Vedan, who is known for his hard-hitting lyrics and outspoken views, are in disbelief over the allegations.

Police Raid at Vedan’s Flat in Tripunithura

Acting on a tip-off, Hill Palace police raided an apartment near Vyttila in the Tripunithura area of Kochi. According to officials, nine individuals, including Vedan, were present during the raid. Police recovered six grams of ganja from the premises. During a press interaction, a police officer stated that he and his friends regularly used the apartment for music practice sessions.

Circle Inspector AL Yesudas confirmed that the flat was under surveillance following a specific tip regarding drug use. Following the seizure of contraband, all nine individuals were taken into custody.

Vedan Admits to Ganja Use

The rapper, whose real name is Hirandas Murali, is originally from Thrissur. During questioning, police reported that he admitted to consuming ganja. He reportedly said the drug was used during casual hangouts and music sessions with his team.

This admission was unexpected, particularly because he had previously voiced strong anti-drug messages in his songs and live performances. His arrest has raised questions about the growing issue of drug use in Kerala’s youth and entertainment circles.

Cash and Devices Seized

In addition to the ganja, the police also seized mobile phones and Rs 9.5 lakh in cash from the apartment. Officers said that the money was earned from music shows and performances. Authorities are now trying to trace the source of the drugs and confirm whether the ganja was purchased using part of the seized money.

Officials mentioned that further analysis of the phones may help track communications related to drug procurement or distribution.

Medical Tests and Bail Procedures

All the arrested individuals, including Vedan, underwent medical examinations. Police completed all formal procedures required under narcotics law. At this stage, police have decided to release them on station bail, which means they can go home but must report for further investigation as required.

However, the police have also confirmed that a larger investigation is underway. The following steps include identifying the supplier and understanding whether this was part of a wider network or a one-time incident.

Who Is Vedan?

He rose to fame through independent Malayalam rap music. His tracks often speak about social injustice, street struggles, caste oppression, and political issues. His name, which means "hunter" in Malayalam, symbolized his raw and fearless style of storytelling through rap.

He earned a loyal fan base, especially among young people, for addressing issues that mainstream music often overlooked. Vedan’s persona combined artistic depth with activism, which makes this arrest all the more shocking to his fans.

Fans React with Shock and Disappointment

Many of his fans have taken to social media to express their disbelief. While some have defended the artist, others feel let down. Many pointed out the irony of a person who spoke out against drug abuse now being linked to a drug case. This has sparked a broader conversation about authenticity and accountability in the entertainment industry.

Supporters are urging people not to judge too quickly and to wait for the legal process to unfold. Some claim that possession of six grams of ganja is not a serious offense, while others argue that public figures have a greater responsibility to set examples.

Not an Isolated Case in Kerala's Entertainment Industry

The arrest of Vedan is the latest in a string of similar incidents. Just a day before, Malayalam directors Khalid Rahman and Ashraf Hamsa were arrested for possessing 1.63 grams of hybrid ganja. They were also released on station bail.

Recently, popular actor Shine Tom Chacko was arrested after trying to evade police during a raid at a hotel. These repeated incidents suggest a deeper issue within Kerala’s film and music circles regarding recreational drug use.

What Happens Next for Vedan?

For now, he has been released on bail, but the police investigation is far from over. Authorities will continue to trace the source of the seized drugs and may question more people connected to Vedan’s inner circle. If more evidence surfaces, the case could take a more serious turn.

It’s unclear how this incident will affect Vedan’s music career. He may face backlash from both fans and sponsors. However, some believe this could also be a moment of reflection and redemption for the artist.

Conclusion

The arrest of the rapper has stunned Kerala's music lovers. Known for his anti-drug stance and socially charged lyrics, Vedan now finds himself at the center of a drug investigation. As the police dig deeper, the incident sheds light on the growing problem of drug use within creative communities in Kerala.

For now, all eyes are on the legal proceedings and whether he can rebuild his image in the days to come.
