New Delhi, April 15, 2025 Businessman Robert Vadra, husband of Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi, appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Tuesday, April 15, after being summoned in a long-standing Haryana land deal case. Vadra, who has been questioned multiple times in the past, has once again dismissed the allegations as part of a “political vendetta” and a “witch hunt” orchestrated to silence him and his family.

Let’s break down what’s happening, what the case is about, and why it's making headlines again.

What Is the Haryana Land Deal Case?

The Haryana land deal case goes back to 2008, when Robert Vadra’s company Skylight Hospitality Pvt Ltd purchased around 3.5 acres of land in Shikohpur, Gurgaon (now Gurugram), Haryana. The land was bought from Onkareshwar Properties for Rs 7.5 crore.

Here’s what made it controversial:

  • Within just a day, the land was mutated (ownership legally changed) in Vadra's company’s name — a process that usually takes months.

  • Shortly after, the then Congress-led Haryana government, under CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda, granted development permission for a housing project on the land.

  • Just four months later, real estate giant DLF agreed to buy the same land from Vadra’s company for a whopping Rs 58 crore.

  • That’s an almost 700% increase in land value in a matter of months.

The ED suspects that the profits made through this transaction were laundered or had illicit financial trails, which is why Vadra has been under the radar of investigation agencies.

Why Is ED Summoning Robert Vadra Again?

Robert Vadra was summoned earlier on April 8, 2025, but he didn’t appear, citing personal reasons. A second summons was issued for April 15, following which he arrived at the ED office in Delhi.

According to ED officials:

“We have received new information related to the Haryana land deal and want to confront Vadra with it. His statement will be recorded under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).”

Vadra was questioned for nearly three hours on Tuesday.

Vadra Reacts: “It’s Political Vendetta”

Outside the ED office, Vadra strongly denied any wrongdoing. Speaking to reporters, he said:

“I’m not hiding. I’ve submitted over 23,000 documents in the past. This is clearly a political vendetta.”

He further alleged:

  • That the ruling BJP is targeting him and his brother-in-law Rahul Gandhi, especially when they speak against government policies.

  • That central agencies like ED are being misused to divert attention from real issues.

  • That whenever he expresses interest in joining politics, such cases are revived to tarnish his image.

Background: Who Else Is Involved?

The case is not just limited to Robert Vadra. Other prominent names include:

  • Bhupinder Singh Hooda – Former CM of Haryana. He was in office when the land was approved for development.

  • DLF – The company that bought the land from Skylight Hospitality.

  • Onkareshwar Properties – The original seller of the land.

In 2018, an FIR was registered against Vadra, Hooda, DLF, and Onkareshwar Properties under various charges:

  • Criminal conspiracy

  • Cheating and forgery

  • Prevention of Corruption Act

All parties have denied any wrongdoing.

What is Skylight Hospitality?

Skylight Hospitality Pvt Ltd is a firm set up by Robert Vadra in 2007 with a starting capital of just Rs 1 lakh. The company was primarily involved in real estate and infrastructure-related investments.

In the Shikohpur land deal, the land bought for Rs 7.5 crore was later sold to DLF for Rs 58 crore, making it one of the most scrutinized transactions in the company’s history.

What Happens Next?

The ED has not disclosed if more summons will be issued, but sources suggest that Vadra may be called again depending on how the investigation progresses. If the agency finds credible evidence of money laundering, it could lead to:

  • Charges being filed

  • Court proceedings

  • Possible asset seizures

However, Vadra remains confident:

“I’ve appeared before ED over 15 times in the last 20 years and always cooperated. There’s nothing to hide.”

Why This Case Matters Politically

The Haryana land deal controversy often resurfaces during politically sensitive times. With the 2025 general elections not too far away, political observers see this as more than just a legal matter.

  • Congress claims it’s a distraction tactic.

  • BJP insists the law is taking its course.

  • Voters are left wondering whether it's justice or politics at play.

Final Words

Robert Vadra’s appearance at the ED office is more than just a procedural move it’s a flashpoint in the ongoing battle between two of India’s biggest political families and the ruling establishment. As the Haryana land deal case unfolds further, it will continue to stir debates over corruption, politics, and the credibility of investigative institutions.
