uBlock Origin Users Hit by Google Chrome Extension Purge

Google is making significant changes to the Chrome browser, which are affecting millions of users, especially those who rely on ad-blocking extensions like uBlock Origin. To enhance privacy and security, Google is shifting from the old extension standard, Manifest V2, to the new Manifest V3. While this new standard brings some benefits, it also removes key features that made uBlock Origin and similar extensions work effectively. As a result, many Chrome users see their favorite ad blockers disabled.

What is Happening with Chrome Extensions?

Chrome is migrating to Manifest V3, a new specification that aims to improve users' security and privacy. However, it also limits the capabilities of ad-blocking extensions like uBlock Origin. Google has begun disabling older extensions that are incompatible with the new standard. uBlock Origin was one of the first to be affected, and many users now notice that their extensions no longer work.

A notification will appear in Chrome for affected users. The browser prompts them to either remove or manage their extensions. Users will see a message: “This extension is no longer supported.” This may be frustrating for those who rely on uBlock Origin to block intrusive ads, trackers, and malware.

Why is Google Making These Changes?

Google's decision to phase out Manifest V2 is part of a broader effort to improve the security and privacy of Chrome users. Manifest V3 brings changes that aim to prevent abusive behaviors from extensions. One of the main goals is to make it harder for malicious extensions to access user data.

While the move to Manifest V3 benefits security, it also has trade-offs. The new specification removes a key feature that ad blockers depend on. As a result, ad blockers like uBlock Origin can no longer function as they did before. Mozilla is unwilling to make this compromise. Firefox continues to support both Manifest V2 and V3, allowing users to keep their ad blockers intact.

The Impact on uBlock Origin Users

The transition to Manifest V3 is particularly hard on uBlock Origin users. The popular ad blocker has been a go-to solution for millions of users who want to block ads, trackers, and other unwanted content. However, due to the changes in Chrome, uBlock Origin users see their extension either disabled or removed.

Since uBlock Origin relies on certain Manifest V2 features, it can no longer work in Chrome as it did before. To adapt, the developers of uBlock Origin have introduced a new version called uBlock Origin Lite. This version has more limited filtering capabilities. It can still block some ads and trackers, but not to the extent the full version can.

This reduction in functionality has disappointed many users. The full version of uBlock Origin was highly effective at blocking unwanted ads and improving browsing speed. Now, users must either settle for the limited features of uBlock Origin Lite or look for alternative solutions.

What Are Your Options?

You may wonder what your options are if you are among the many users affected by the uBlock Origin phaseout. There are several ways to continue blocking ads in Chrome.

  1. Switch to uBlock Origin Lite: The new version of uBlock Origin is still available but has fewer features. This is your best option if you want to continue using uBlock Origin.

  2. Switch to Firefox: Mozilla’s browser has continued supporting both Manifest V2 and V3. This means that uBlock Origin and other ad blockers that rely on Manifest V2 will continue to work as expected in Firefox. If you are unhappy with the changes in Chrome, you can try switching to Firefox.

  3. Use Other Chromium Browsers: The move to Manifest V3 also affects Other Chromium-based browsers, such as Microsoft Edge and Brave. However, Brave has said it will offer "limited" support for Manifest V2 extensions. This may be an option for users who want to continue using older versions of their extensions, though it’s not a long-term solution.

  4. Look for Alternatives: If you are no longer satisfied with uBlock Origin Lite or other Chromium-based browsers, you may want to explore alternative ad blockers. Many options, including Adblock Plus and Privacy Badger, may offer similar features and are available.

How Will This Affect Other Browsers?

While Google Chrome is making the most significant push to phase out Manifest V2, other Chrome-based browsers are also being impacted. Microsoft Edge, Brave, and other Chrome browsers are losing support for older extensions. However, Brave has promised to offer some support for Manifest V2 extensions, though it will be limited.

In contrast, Mozilla Firefox is sticking with both Manifest V2 and V3. This provides a viable alternative for users dissatisfied with Chrome's changes. Firefox users can also continue using uBlock Origin without worrying about losing functionality.
