Bollywood icon Shyam Benegal passes away
India's legendary filmmaker Shyam Bengal, known as one of the greatest masters of the craft, has passed away at the age of 90 in Mumbai on 23 December. He was being treated for kidney problems at Wockhardt Hospital, his daughter Piya Benegal has said while confirming the news.
Benegal’s work brought powerful and realistic stories to the screen, earning him praise from fans and critics. His well-loved films, including Ankur, Manthan, Nishant, Bhumika, and Zubeidaa, focused on ordinary people’s struggles.
The director was celebrated for his unique style and received 18 National Awards during his career. He was also honored with the Padma Shiri in 1976 and the Padma Bhushan in 1991 for his contributions to Indian cinema.
He celebrated his 90th birthday on December 14, surrounded by friends and fellow artists.
News of his death has left the film industry and his fans deeply saddened. Many actors and directors, including Shabana Azmi and Naseeruddin Shah, paid tribute to him, calling him a true legend.
Shyam Benegal’s unforgettable films and dedication to meaningful storytelling will always be remembered in Indian cinema.
