A 23-year-old British TikTok influencer faces potential execution by firing squad in Dubai after being charged with the premeditated murder of her boyfriend.
The advocacy organisation Detained in Dubai communicated the development to the BBC following the arrest of Brooke George on June 22.
George, who is from Kent, England, stated that she stabbed the man in self-defence during a violent domestic dispute. According to Detained in Dubai Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Radha Stirling, the partner had become abusive, punched George, withheld her passport, and attacked her inside their apartment.
“She feared for her life and, reaching for a kitchen knife within her grasp, acted in self-defence,” Stirling said.
The former John Lewis employee was taken into custody early on June 22. Under United Arab Emirates (UAE) law, a conviction for premeditated murder carries the death penalty.
The mother of the accused, Thereza George, informed the BBC that her daughter had a swollen eye during a conversation immediately after the incident. She stated that she believes her daughter was attempting to escape.
Stirling raised further concerns regarding the circumstances, suggesting George may have been lured to the UAE for exploitation.
The organisation cited unexplained behavioural changes in the boyfriend, the purchase of a one-way ticket, and the confiscation of George’s travel documents as indicators.
Additionally, the advocacy group reported procedural violations during the detention. They stated that George was denied access to the British embassy, forced to provide statements without legal counsel present, and subjected to a strip search conducted by male officers.
The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office confirmed to the BBC that officials are supporting a detained British woman and her family. The department stated it remains in contact with the local authorities in Dubai.
