Police in Rawalpindi have registered a case of rash driving after a video showing a man clinging to a moving car’s bonnet while a motorcycle is being dragged underneath it was widely shared on social media.
The video showed the man holding onto the bonnet and front windscreen as the car moves along Murree Road. A motorcycle can be seen trapped near the car’s front wheel, with sparks flying off as it is dragged along the road.
According to traffic police, the incident took place on Friday night within the jurisdiction of New Town police station after two vehicles were involved in a collision on Murree Road. The collision was followed by an exchange between the two parties.
Police stated that the man seen on the bonnet was the owner of the other vehicle involved in the collision. His vehicle was damaged in the crash, after which he climbed onto the bonnet of the car seen in the video to stop its driver and seek compensation for the damage, according to the traffic police account.
The car continued moving despite the man still present on the bonnet. A motorcycle then came in its path and became trapped underneath the vehicle, which continued along the road while dragging the motorcycle, police said.
The FIR [First Information Report], registered at New Town police station on the complaint of New Town Traffic Police Inspector Wahid Ikhlaq, stated that the video was seen circulating on social media and that a probe established the incident took place on September 25.
According to the FIR, the incident occurred at around 11:25pm and involved a black vehicle and a white Honda Civic.
Police have not identified either the driver of the black vehicle or the driver of the white Honda Civic. No one has been arrested as yet.
The case was registered under Section 279 of the Pakistan Penal Code, which deals with rash driving or riding on a public way, and Section 427, which concerns mischief causing damage to property.
The complainant described the incident in the FIR as proof of negligence and carelessness and said it involved causing harm and intentionally damaging a vehicle.
