The Federal Ministry for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives has announced that China will provide digital skills training to 300,000 Pakistani youths on an annual basis.
Federal Minister Ahsan Iqbal shared the development during a discussion with the President of Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) Faheemur Rehman Saigol at the 3rd LCCI IT Freelancing Awards 2026 in Lahore.
According to Ahsan Iqbal, the initiative aims to strengthen the national technology sector and knowledge economy. The planning minister highlighted the global standing of the local workforce, stating, “Pakistan has emerged as the fourth-largest freelancing country in the world and the talent and capabilities of its youth are playing a vital role in expanding the digital economy and boosting exports.”
He further noted that traditional business setups are no longer mandatory for economic success. “Success in today’s world no longer requires large offices or heavy investments; rather, knowledge, skills, and access to technology have become the most valuable assets,” Iqbal stated, adding that Pakistani youth are generating foreign exchange by serving global clients.
LCCI President Saigol emphasized the necessity of technological adaptation, urging freelancers and IT professionals to align themselves with Artificial Intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies to maintain global competitiveness.
He stated that innovation, information technology, and the digital economy form the core pillars of the “Uraan Pakistan” vision. Saigol noted that a joint effort between the public and private sectors could establish Pakistan as a regional digital economy hub.
Punjab Finance Minister Mian Mujtaba Shujaur Rehman also addressed the gathering, noting that freelancing has transitioned into a significant pillar of the national economy. Rehman remarked, “Pakistani freelancers are, in fact, digital ambassadors of the country who are projecting a positive image of Pakistan on the global stage.”
The provincial finance minister stated that the Punjab government recognizes the requirement for internationally accepted payment systems and a robust digital financial ecosystem.
He confirmed that the provincial administration is collaborating with the federal government and the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) to resolve international payment barriers for freelancers, with the objective of ensuring secure, fast, and convenient channels for earnings.
