Customs authorities have seized 1,200 kilogrammes of hashish worth an estimated Rs540 crore in the international market during an anti-smuggling operation near the M-2 motorway.

According to customs officials, the seizure was made by the Customs anti-smuggling squad during a raid based on intelligence reports on October 2 at around 2:30 am.

Officials said the operation also resulted in the recovery of around 100kg of poppy seeds, firearms and a non-customs-paid 2005 model Toyota Prado.

The vehicle was allegedly being used to transport the drugs.

The suspects escaped from the scene under the cover of darkness during the operation, officials added.

A case has been registered against unidentified suspects under the Control of Narcotic Substances Act 1997 and the Customs Act 1969, according to the authorities.

The Control of Narcotic Substances Act provides the legal framework for offences involving narcotic drugs and controlled substances, while the Customs Act governs customs-related offences, including the unlawful movement of goods.

The seizure was carried out by Customs Enforcement, which operates under the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), as part of its anti-smuggling operations, according to officials.

Authorities did not provide further details about the intended destination of the seized drugs or the identities of those involved.

The investigation into the case is continuing, while authorities are seeking to identify the suspects who fled the site, officials said.
