A fatal collision between two passenger trains left one driver dead and eighty-nine people injured in Bradford, England. Emergency crews, including an air ambulance, rushed to the tracks just south of the Elstow interchange shortly after 5:00 PM UK time on Friday evening following the impact between two London-bound East Midlands Railway (EMR) services.
The British Transport Police (BTP) confirmed the driver’s death later that evening, initiating a full-scale forensic response alongside local fire, rescue, and ambulance teams.
According to the East of England Ambulance Service, the collision resulted in varying degrees of casualties, with 11 passengers suffering “very serious injuries”, 22 left seriously injured, and a further 56 sustaining minor wounds.
Eyewitnesses on board described scenes of absolute chaos, reporting a loud explosion-like bang that violently flung passengers from their seats, causing widespread facial lacerations and suspected fractures. Aerial footage from the site indicated that while most carriages remained on the tracks, the sheer force of the impact shunted at least one carriage entirely off the rails.
The collision involved the 4:40 PM UK time EMR service from Corby to London St Pancras and the 3:50 PM UK time service from Nottingham to London St Pancras. Passengers recounted seeing the preceding train stationary or slow-moving on the same line immediately before the impact occurred.
The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) has deployed a team of inspectors to the scene to gather evidence and determine how both trains came to be on the same track.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer expressed deep concern over the tragedy, offering his thoughts to the family of the deceased driver and those severely impacted. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander confirmed a rigorous investigation is underway, whilst local hospitals in Bedford and Luton have urged the public to avoid emergency departments unless facing a genuine medical crisis. EMR has announced that all services to and from London St Pancras will remain suspended over the weekend.
