Electricity consumers across Pakistan are being charged up to approximately Rs9 per unit in additional taxes, with the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) using the energy sector as an additional avenue for tax collection.
According to the report, various taxes are being added to consumers’ electricity bills under different heads, putting a strain on both domestic and industrial users.
Electricity bills currently carry six different types of taxes, including an 18 percent General Sales Tax (GST), income tax and advance tax, the report said.
The additional levy of up to Rs9 per unit has added to the financial burden on households and businesses alike, the report added.
