The family of a young motorcyclist in Lahore, who died in a traffic accident allegedly caused by a traffic warden, has claimed that police refused to release the body until a written statement pinning blame on the deceased was submitted.
According to a private media outlet, the family said that police shifted the body from Services Hospital to General Hospital following the death of their son, namely Zain, a resident of Sanda, who sustained serious injuries in an accident in Shadman area of the provincial capital.
Speaking to a reporter, Zain’s brother Ayaz said that the family was told that the body would be handed over only after an application was processed. He also said police asked the family to provide a written statement accepting responsibility for the incident.
Ayaz alleged that the traffic warden came into the middle of the road and pushed Zain’s moving motorcycle, causing him to fall and suffer a skull fracture.
He said the officials could have stopped Zain and spoken to him instead of using the method that led to the incident.
“If he had stopped him and talked, it would make sense. Their method of stopping him was wrong. Why have CCTV cameras been installed?”
In his applications submitted to Shadman Police Station and the office of the deputy inspector general (DIG) operations as well as the Model Town superintendent of police (SP), Ayaz named a traffic assistant and a senior traffic warden and sought action against them.
The application alleged that the traffic officials later registered a case against Zain in an attempt to protect themselves.
The DIG has ordered an inquiry into the matter.
