The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has formed a new nine-member Joint Investigation Team (JIT) to investigate a Rs172 billion digital fraud and money laundering case involving call centres in Islamabad.
As per the details, the investigation dates back to 2025, when authorities traced a network allegedly involved in carrying out fraud through call centres in Islamabad, and now, investigators are also examining the possible involvement of senior government officials.
Initial findings suggested that Rs172 billion generated through the alleged fraud was laundered and transferred abroad through accounts held at different banks and microfinance institutions.
The newly-formed JIT will investigate the alleged fraud network and trace the movement of funds transferred through the banking and microfinance system.
Separately, local authorities arrested 284 foreigners from a call centre in Islamabad’s Gulberg Greens area over alleged involvement in illegal activities, and cancelled their visas.
The FIA chief said that several Pakistani citizens suffered financial losses as a result of the fraud.
