Hamas announced on Monday that it has dissolved the body responsible for governing the Gaza Strip for nearly two decades, paving the way for a Palestinian technocratic committee to assume civilian administrative responsibilities under the Gaza ceasefire framework.
The group’s media office confirmed that the head of the emergency government committee, Mohammed al-Farra, had submitted his resignation and that the committee had been formally dissolved.
Hamas said the move was intended to facilitate the transfer of administrative authority to the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (NCAG), led by Palestinian technocrat Ali Shaath.
Hamas spokesperson Hazem Qassem said the organisation was relinquishing day-to-day governance to remove what he described as “pretexts” used by Israel to continue military operations in Gaza. He added that Hamas was ready to hand over governmental responsibilities and hoped the NCAG would begin operating in the territory as soon as possible.
The NCAG was established by the Board of Peace created by United States (US) President Donald Trump following the October 2025 ceasefire between Hamas and Israel. However, the committee has yet to enter Gaza, with reports suggesting Israeli objections have delayed its deployment.
Hamas officials said Palestinian factions welcomed the decision during recent talks in Cairo, describing it as a constructive step towards establishing a unified civilian administration in Gaza.
