The Punjab Horticulture Authority (PHA) has launched a restoration initiative for Nehru Park, a historic site in Lahore’s Krishan Nagar neighbourhood, with plans to improve its landscaping, facilities and overall appearance.

The project aims to revive the park while preserving its historical significance, PHA Director General Ahmad Usman Javaid said.

Under the plan, the authority’s horticultural wing will lay lush green lawns and plant seasonal flowers, while the engineering team will oversee the installation of lighting, benches and swings for children.

PHA has already undertaken several improvement works at the site, including repairs to the boundary wall, the placement of decorative floral plants inside and outside the park, and the installation of a cricket pavilion.

Decorative fountains are also planned as part of the restoration, Javaid added.

“Nehru Park is not just a public park but a site of historical importance, and it is our responsibility to preserve its character while restoring it as a vibrant green space for the citizens,” he said.

The restoration is part of a wider PHA initiative to renovate more than 800 smaller community parks across Lahore that fall under its jurisdiction, according to Javaid.

He added that students and civil society organisations would also be involved in the restoration effort.

Nehru Park was the venue for the Indian National Congress’s adoption of the Purna Swaraj, or Complete Independence, resolution on Dec 31, 1929, during its Lahore session.
