Jazz, formerly known as Mobilink, was founded in 1994 as a joint venture between Motorola Inc. and Saif Group. In February 2001, Egypt-based Orascom Investment Holding bought Motorola’s shares in Jazz to become the majority shareholder with 69% control. In June 2007, the Egyptian company purchased the remaining shares under Saif Group, becoming Jazz’s 100% owner.
VEON, a Dutch company, bought most of Orascom’s telecom assets, including Jazz, 2010 for $6.5 billion. This made VEON the world’s fifth-largest mobile network operator. In 2015, VEON bought all of Warid Telecom, a Pakistani company owned by the Abu Dhabi Group. This merger created a combined subscriber base of 50 million.
Mobilink and Warid joined forces in Pakistan and became Jazz in 2017. As of July 2024, Jazz is the most popular phone company in Pakistan, with 71 million users accross the country, and a whopping 47 million of them use super-fast 4G internet!
VEON already owns some of Jazz but is buying even more shares from another company (Abu Dhabi Group) to become the complete owner. In March 2021, it purchased some shares for $273 million, and now they’re getting the rest.
