Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has selected fashion designer Hassan Sheheryar Yasin, known as HSY, to design its new cabin crew uniforms, which will come into use from October 31.

The airline announcef on Thursday that the uniforms will debut on the inaugural London-to-Islamabad flight of its newly acquired Dreamliner aircraft.

According to a PIA press release, the uniforms feature breathable fabrics and structured tailoring, with a focus on durability during long-haul flights and allowing crew members to move comfortably while working.

The airline selected Yasin’s designs following a showcase in Karachi featuring collections from some of Pakistan’s leading fashion designers. The participants included Maheen Khan, Deepak and Fahad, Generation, Ismail Farid, Munib Nawaz, Deepak Perwani, Faraz Manan, Amir Adnan and Nomi Ansari, whose designs PIA has used for the past 12 years.

A panel of five judges assessed the collections. The panel included Shamoon Sultan, founder and chief executive of Khaadi, couturier Nilofer Shahid, beauty and style expert Nabila, Hina Tayyaba Khalil, vice-chancellor of the Pakistan Institute of Fashion and Design (PIFD) and Naseem Tehrani, a PIA veteran with 33 years of experience in aviation.

Yasin joins a list of designers who have created uniforms for the national carrier. French designer Pierre Cardin designed PIA’s A-line tunic and hood in 1966, while British designer Sir Hardy Amies, who served as Queen Elizabeth II’s royal couturier, contributed to the airline’s uniform designs in the 1970s.

Speaking about his latest work, Yasin said that designing for the national airline meant representing the country’s pride and hospitality.
He added that the aim was to create uniforms in which cabin crew members felt “extraordinarily confident and comfortable”.

Yasin emphasised that the designs “respect our heritage, reflect modern fashion and tell our story beautifully in every airport across the globe”.
