Former prime minister Imran Khan told his sister, Dr Uzma Khan, that he was being tortured and subjected to mistreatment, as she recounted their conversation at a press conference alongside Dr Faisal Sultan.
“I have been wronged; I am being tortured,” Uzma quoted Khan as telling her.
She maintained that Khan had not objected to travelling to Shifa International Hospital for medical tests. “Imran Khan did not say at all that he did not want to go to Shifa,” she said.
Uzma explained that she had repeatedly told Khan they would go to Shifa after his initial check-up. “He was very happy and satisfied with this,” she added.
She also recalled Khan telling her, “Tell Sohail to speed up his movement,” referring to Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Sohail Afridi.
Uzma said Khan had limited access to information while in custody, with neither newspapers nor television available to him. She added that he “did not even know which month it was”.
The family had brought supplies for a whole month, she said, as they expected the medical process to take some time.
According to Uzma, a doctor at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) advised that one of Khan’s eyes should be examined immediately.
She told the doctor they were going to Shifa International and would have comprehensive tests carried out, including the recommended eye examination.
Khan’s blood pressure was checked before he was taken for an injection in his eye, Uzma said.
She described him as pleased at the prospect of undergoing complete tests at Shifa before returning to Adiala jail.
The following evening, the family received a call asking them to reach Adiala. Uzma and Dr Faisal Sultan were taken inside the jail and seated in the room of Deputy Superintendent Sabtain.
Khan was then placed in a vehicle with tinted windows and driven away. “Ten minutes later, I was also taken,” Uzma recounted, adding that she was transported in a Land Cruiser accompanied by a police vehicle and another car.
“There was darkness everywhere, and then I found out that they had brought us to PIMS Hospital,” she said.
Uzma made the remarks while describing Khan’s medical assessment and the circumstances surrounding his movement between medical facilities.
