United States (US) Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee has said that the recently signed defence agreement between Pakistan, Turkiye and Saudi Arabia is unlikely to have a destabilising impact on the Middle East.
Speaking in an interview aired on Al Arabiya English, Huckabee said that the three countries appeared to view the agreement as a way to strengthen their security and did not seem interested in starting a conflict.
“I think that those three countries believe it will be helpful to them to band together for security purposes. So, I don’t see it having a destabilising impact,” he said, adding that Saudi Arabia had recently faced attacks from Iran and the Houthis and understood the security challenges in the region.
He said that Riyadh would likely welcome support from regional allies, including Pakistan and Turkiye. “They don’t seem to have a desire to start any conflict,” Huckabee added.
The interviewer had asked Huckabee about the impact of the joint defence agreement, signed earlier this month by Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkiye, on security and stability in the Middle East.
The American diplomat also expressed hope that the situation would not develop into another regional conflict.
