Chinese Foreign Minister (FM) Wang Yi has labeled military actions by the United States (US) and Israel against Iran “illegitimate” during high-level talks in Beijing. During a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, Wang emphasized that the region has reached a “decisive turning point” where a full cessation of hostilities is the only viable path forward.
Beijing’s top diplomat stressed that China remains ready to facilitate de-escalation, noting that “a complete ceasefire is essential” to prevent further instability.
Araghchi, who arrived in Beijing on Wednesday with a diplomatic delegation, thanked China for what he called a “firm stance” against Washington and Tel Aviv.
He referred to Beijing as a “sincere friend” and noted that cooperation between the two nations will likely strengthen under these pressures.
The Iranian minister characterized the military operations against his country as “a blatant act of aggression and a flagrant violation of international law”.
While discussing the future of diplomatic efforts, Araghchi maintained that Tehran will prioritize its “legitimate rights and interests” during negotiations. He clarified that Iran is seeking a “fair and comprehensive agreement” and will not settle for less.
This visit follows a series of communications between the two ministers, including three phone calls since the outbreak of conflict on February 28.
During their discussions, Wang praised the resilience of the Iranian people and called for the US and Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz as soon as possible.
