Actor Imran Khan has been ordered to leave India by October 28 after Mumbai Police took action against him for participating in a protest organised by the political group Cockroach Janta Party (CJP).

The actor, who is Bollywood star Aamir Khan’s nephew, received a notice from Mumbai Police over his participation in the protest despite not being an Indian citizen.

“Action has been taken against Imran Khan under the relevant provision of the Immigration Act over his participation in the protest despite not being an Indian citizen,” the police said.

Imran is a United States (US) citizen and holds an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card. Police issued the notice under the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025, whose Section 7 empowers the Indian government to regulate or restrict the entry, departure, presence and movement of foreign nationals in the country.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Kirit Somaiya had earlier approached Mumbai Police, alleging that the actor had taken part in an “illegal political agitation” and violated OCI provisions and visa conditions.

Imran attended the protest at Mumbai’s August Kranti Maidan on October 10, where demonstrators opposed Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. His partner, actor Lekha Washington and cousin Zayne Marie Khan also joined the gathering.

Following his detention, Imran shared a picture of himself inside a police van with the caption, “Apparently I’m going for a drive.”

A video of the actor saying “Jai Hind” to police officers also circulated online. In another clip, he said that he did not know why police had taken him into custody and claimed that officers picked up demonstrators from the streets and put them in vans.

He added that police drove him and other detainees around for around two hours before releasing them.

Speaking to the media, Imran said that he had attended the gathering as a Mumbai resident rather than to present specific demands.

“I don’t have demands. I am here as a citizen, as a person who lives in this city. I am here to see why freedom of movement is being restricted. Why are people’s voices being suppressed? That is why I am here,” the actor said.

Mumbai Police detained around 400 people during the protest, including members of the Tushar Gandhi-led organisation ‘Hum Bharat Ke Log’ and activists from the Communist Party of India (Marxist).
