A trader in Kanpur, India, has been beaten to death by four men after he objected to them urinating outside a market. His family is now demanding protection and accusing police of delaying the registration of a case, news reports have said.
Amit Gupta, an auto trader, was assaulted on a road after he asked the men to stop urinating in front of a market and nearby houses, according to his family.
The men were reportedly intoxicated at the time of the assault.
The attackers knocked Gupta to the ground and continued beating him, leaving him unconscious with a serious head injury.
They fled the scene before Gupta’s family was informed and took him to hospital.
Doctors treated Gupta but he failed to regain consciousness because of the severity of his injury.
He died two days after the assault, according to the report.
CCTV footage of the attack, recorded outside the family’s home, was handed over to police, the family said.
The footage reportedly shows the four men assaulting Gupta after he had fallen on the road.
Police registered a case 72 hours after the incident against unidentified people and have yet to arrest any suspect.
Police said they would identify the individuals visible in the CCTV footage before taking further action.
Gupta’s post-mortem examination was conducted by police before his body was handed over to his family.
His wife Shalini Gupta, his sister Shivani and other relatives said that they were living in fear because the attackers had not been arrested.
Shalini said she was worried about the safety of her children, who were afraid to use the road where the assault occurred.
She questioned why Gupta had been killed simply for objecting to the men urinating outside a house and demanded justice and protection for her family.
Gupta was one of three brothers and three sisters. His mother died a few days before the assault, according to the report.
