A pharmaceutical trader’s son converting to Islam in India triggered controversy that soon turned into mockery when a cop claimed that the youth was in contact with Dr Israr Ahmed, a Pakistani Islamic scholar and theologian who passed away in 2010.
As per the details, one Ayush Mallik of Shamli in Uttar Pradesh recently converted to Islam and changed his name to Mohammad Ali.
Following the circulation of his photos praying on Eid, his family filed a police complaint under the anti-conversion law. They accused his gym trainer and now-wife, Chandni Qureshi, alongside her family, of a “coordinated brainwashing conspiracy” driven by financial motives to steal the family’s properties.
The young man, on the other hand, has denied the allegations, saying that he embraced Islam willingly and out of personal research that began years ago.
The case, however, took a bizarre turn when Shamli Superintendent of Police Abhishek Jha, during a media briefing, attempted to establish a foreign connection to the conversion and said that the youth was heavily influenced by Pakistani Islamic scholar Dr Israr Ahmed.
“I think he is in touch with him [Dr Israr],” the cop said during the press conference, suggesting active, ongoing communication between Ali and Dr Israr, who passed away 16 years ago.
The blunder immediately went viral, turning a sensitive regional case into a massive source of internet comedy. Netizens wasted no time flooding comment sections with memes, sarcasm and absolute disbelief over the department’s investigative ability.
The internet quickly turned the slip-up into a viral sensation, with one netizen sarcastically writing, “Kudos to UP police for discovering Dr Sahb after 16 years of his demise [sic].”
Another user jokingly questioned the paranormal nature of the alleged investigation, commenting, “Qabr se rabta ho raha hai [He has been contacting from the grave].”
While the trolling also saw people mocking the logical leap made by senior officials during a live press broadcast, one user, hitting out at the recent Bollywood propaganda film Dhurandhar, wrote: “Won’t be surprised to see Dr Israr Sahib in Dhurandhar 3 with peak detailing by Aditya Dhar.”
