A sessions court in Islamabad sentenced 23-year-old Umar Hayat to death on Tuesday for the 2025 murder of 17-year-old TikToker Sana Yousaf, drawing widespread praise from Indian social media users who termed the verdict a contrast to what they described as the failures of their own judicial system.
Hayat shot Yousaf twice inside her Islamabad house on June 2, 2025, after she refused to meet him on her birthday despite him travelling from Jaranwala to the capital.
As news of the verdict spread, Indian users flooded social media with reactions, many pointedly criticising India’s own legal and political landscape.
“Pakistan doing much better than India here,” one user wrote. Another remarked, “I’m from India and I say this time Pakistani judiciary is better than Indian judiciary”.
Several comments drew comparisons with how similar cases are handled across the border. “In India the case would be ignored and in the US the killer would get a slap on the wrist,” one user wrote. Another added, “In India, the accused would be given an MLA ticket”.
“If this was India they would celebrate him with a garland and make him MLA,” one comment read. Another posted, “Meanwhile in India case closed, welcome with flowers, given shows and promotions, then they compete with Pakistan”.
Some users extended the comparison beyond the region. “The European justice system, especially in Germany, should learn a thing or two from this,” one user noted.
Others kept it brief. “Good decision, India should learn this from them,” one user wrote. One comment asked Bangladesh to “Learn something”.
Not all reactions were serious in tone. “Men are so emotional, bye,” one user posted, referencing Hayat’s motive. “I think even Pakistan has better laws than India,” another opined.
