Iran has denied reports that it has been invited to join the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement – a trilateral defence pact signed by Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkiye earlier this month.

As per the details, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei said Tehran had received no such invitation, despite widespread media reports hinting at the possibility of Iran joining the pact that members states say is open for all countries.

He said Iran had not been approached regarding membership of the agreement, rejecting claims that Tehran was considering joining the arrangement.

While Baghaei rejected claims regarding the pact under which an attack on one member would be treated as aggression against all three, he said Pakistan was working to help stabilise the region and contribute to peace.

He also said Iran would not accept pressure from the United States (US), maintaining Tehran’s position against external attempts to influence its policies.
