A joint declaration regarding the breakthrough in the Iran-United States (US) talks is expected to be released at any moment, as the same has been finalised by the mediating teams, journalist Mansoor Ali Khan has claimed.
Pakistan’s Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Field Marshal Asim Munir and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi among members of the diplomatic team has finalised the draft of the declaration, Khan said in a video from the Lake Lucerne Summit in Burgenstock.
He went on to dismiss foreign media reports that the Iranian delegation had walked out of the talks, saying, “The Iranian and other relevant delegations departed Switzerland at 2 am local time, after finalising the text.”
The claims come as the US and Iran agree on a roadmap to reach a final peace deal within 60 days following Sunday’s technical talks.
A joint statement issued on Monday by mediators Pakistan and Qatar also confirmed the timeline, which builds on the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed last Thursday. Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif had also signed the interim agreement as a mediator to address the conflict that began late February.
According to the joint statement, “encouraging progress” was made during the talks, including the creation of a mechanism for further communication.
The framework establishes a high-level committee to provide political oversight on the mediation and chief negotiators will report to this committee and lead working groups focused on nuclear issues, sanctions and monitoring and dispute resolution.
Furthermore, the parties agreed to create a de-confliction cell including the Lebanese Republic to ensure adherence to the termination of illegal military operations in Lebanon.
Following the release of the statement, Iranian Foreign Minister (FM) Abbas Araghchi also stated on X that, “Tireless Pakistani and Qatari mediation has delivered major progress to end the Lebanon war.”
The Iranian FM added that “oil and petrochemical exports were waived, blockade lifted, some frozen assets released and a major reconstruction and development plan launched for Iran”.
He also noted that the first real test of the deal would be the “Lebanon deconfliction cell”.
Meanwhile, an American official stated that negotiations included “all elements of the nuclear deal”. The official added that talks covered “clarifying some of the confusing messaging from Iran on the Strait of Hormuz and building deconfliction mechanisms to ensure the strait will remain fully open”.
