Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is slated to arrive in Pakistan Tuesday for a high-level official visit, marking a pivotal moment in regional diplomacy following the conflict with the United States (US) and Iran.
During his stay, the Iranian president is expected to hold strategic consultations with President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif to discuss bilateral cooperation, expanding trade and matters of shared regional importance.
This visit follows a significant breakthrough in Switzerland where the inaugural session of high-level talks, mediated by Pakistan and Qatar, concluded under the framework of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding.
Earlier in the day, it was reported that a joint declaration regarding the breakthrough in the talks is expected to be released at any moment.
Pakistan’s Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Field Marshal Asim Munir and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi among members of the diplomatic team finalised the draft of the declaration, journalist Mansoor Ali Khan claimed in a video from the Lake Lucerne Summit in Burgenstock.
He went on to dismiss foreign media reports that the Iranian delegation had walked out of the talks, saying, “The Iranian and other relevant delegations departed Switzerland at 2 am local time, after finalising the text.”
The claims had come as the US and Iran agree on a roadmap to reach a final peace deal within 60 days following Sunday’s technical talks.
A joint statement issued on Monday by mediators Pakistan and Qatar also confirmed the timeline.
According to the joint statement, “encouraging progress” was made during the talks, including the creation of a mechanism for further communication.
