Hostilities between the United States (US) and Iran have resumed, marked by three consecutive nights of US airstrikes, Iranian missile attacks on regional bases and the disabling of shipping vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.

As per the details, US President Donald Trump has formally notified Congress that hostilities resumed on July 7, ending a ceasefire that began on April 7.

While the notification opens a 60-day window for military action without congressional approval, following the notice, US forces conducted a five-hour operation targeting Iranian coastal defence systems, missile and drone sites, and maritime assets in Bushehr, Chah Bahar, Jask, Konarak, Abu Musa and Bandar Abbas.

Trump also announced a naval blockade on Iranian ports. Following the announcement and active clashes, oil prices rose nine percent, with Brent crude reaching $82.90 a barrel and West Texas Intermediate hitting $77.87.

Despite the strikes, Trump told reporters, “Yeah, I think a deal is possible. Sure, I do,” adding that Tehran walked away from a potential agreement two days prior.

In the Strait of Hormuz, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy struck and disabled two supertankers.

The IRGC claimed the vessels were “misled by American provocations”, turned off navigation systems and ignored warnings before entering mined waters.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) confirmed two of its ships were hit, resulting in one death and eight injuries.

In response to the US operations, the IRGC launched drone and missile attacks against the US Fifth Fleet in Bahrain, targeting fuel depots, radar installations.

Local authorities in Bahrain sounded sirens, warning citizens to seek shelter.

The IRGC also launched ballistic missiles at a US air base in Jordan, calling on the Jordanian public to dismantle American facilities.

Jordanian armed forces intercepted four of the missiles in their airspace. Additionally, Iranian state media reported that the IRGC aerospace force shot down two US Lucas drones over Bandar Abbas and Lar.

Coinciding with the drone shootdowns, the Iranian Parliament introduced a bill titled “Strategic Action for the Security and Sustainable Progress of the Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf”.

“We remain steadfast in defending our red lines, particularly regarding the management of the Strait of Hormuz,” Ebrahim Azizi, head of the National Security Committee, said.
