Islamabad police have directed traffic officers not to register unnecessary cases under Section 279 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) for traffic violations, instructing them instead to deal with offences through fines in accordance with the law.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Islamabad Ali Wasim issued the direction as part of measures aimed at ensuring that traffic enforcement does not result in unnecessary criminal proceedings against citizens, according to reports.
Section 279 of the PPC deals with rash or negligent driving on a public road when it endangers human life or is likely to cause injury.
The provision carries a potential prison term of up to two years, a fine, or both.
Wasim directed traffic officials to impose fines where traffic rules are violated and to avoid registering cases against citizens without sufficient justification.
“Traffic officers should avoid unnecessary cases against citizens,” the DIG said, according to the directions.
He also instructed traffic personnel to maintain a courteous, polite and responsible attitude while dealing with members of the public.
The DIG urged citizens, meanwhile, to comply fully with traffic regulations and avoid violations. He called on the public to cooperate with traffic police to help maintain the smooth flow of traffic.
Wasim said adherence to traffic laws was essential for ensuring a safe and peaceful travelling environment.
The DIG has recently emphasised public facilitation and courteous treatment of citizens in several engagements with Islamabad Police officers.
During visits to police stations and an open court, he instructed officials to address citizens’ complaints promptly and deal with them on merit.
