An Islamabad police officer has been suspended after a video of him slapping a citizen during a document check in the New Blue Area circulated on social media.
The video footage shows the police personnel stopping three young men on the roadside and demanding their documents. After one of the citizens hands over the requested paperwork, the officer slaps him across the face and leaves the scene.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Suleman Zafar took notice of the video and ordered the immediate suspension of the officer involved.
In an official statement, SSP Zafar said that “inappropriate behavior by police personnel towards citizens would not be tolerated.”
This development follows an incident in June at the Shams Colony Police Station, where senior authorities took action after videos on social media showed a suspect chained inside an investigation room.
The footage showed the restrained suspect while a private individual, identified as Naveed Rehman, recorded TikTok videos alongside him.
Following public outrage over the unrestricted access given to the civilian, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Muhammad Jawad Tariq directed a high-level inquiry to ascertain the facts of the case.
A criminal case was subsequently registered against Sub-Inspector Tasneem and his civilian accomplice, Naveed Rehman, leading to the arrest of both individuals.
