Hollywood star Jennifer Lawrence crossed the one million followers mark when she finally joining Instagram, ending an years long period in which she did not have a public social media account.

The 36-year-old actress created the account on Wednesday, September 10, using the handle @jlaw. In her bio, Lawrence joked about not getting her preferred username, writing, “jenniferlawrence was taken.”

For her first post, Lawrence shared a video in which she explained that she was giving Instagram a try but was already prepared to leave if users responded negatively.

“So, yeah, I am givin it a shot, and if anyone says anything negative, I will quit immediately, no questions asked,” Lawrence said in the Instagram reel. She added, “If anyone thinks something mean, I’ll know. And I’ll quit.”

Her account gained more than one million followers within two hours of going live, with the total later reaching nearly 3.5 million.

Lawrence then followed up on her comments about negative reactions through an Instagram story. Clarifying what she meant by “mean” comments, she wrote, “Please be mindful that any mean and aggressive comments can negatively affect the baby. It’s me. I’m the baby.”

The A-lister had previously explained why she stayed away from having a public social media presence despite using social media privately. Lawrence said she was “a voyeur” who watched rather than spoke online.

“I’m on it. But I’m a voyeur: I watch, I don’t speak,” she said in an earlier interview. Lawrence said she did not want to invite the backlash and opinions that often come with having a public profile.

“There is always so much backlash. So many people are listening and paying attention, and they have so many opinions about absolutely everything,” she said.

While she has now made her Instagram account public, Lawrence has previously said that she does not plan to bring her two children with husband Cooke Maroney into that part of her work.

“I don’t want anyone to feel welcome into their existence,” she said in an interview, explaining that keeping them away from her work on social media was where she wanted to start protecting their privacy.

Lawrence will next appear as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, a prequel to The Hunger Games franchise, which is set to be released in November.
