Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani has resigned as a Lahore High Court (LHC) judge and sent his resignation to the President, citing personal reasons.
Justice Kayani joined the LHC after the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) approved his transfer from the Islamabad High Court (IHC) in April this year. He ranked tenth on the LHC seniority list.
Media reports said that the judge had been transferred from Lahore to the Rawalpindi Bench under a newly issued judges’ roster just two days before his resignation.
Justice Kayani was among three IHC judges transferred to other high courts following a proposal initiated by IHC Chief Justice Sardar Sarfraz Dogar.
A JCP meeting chaired by Chief Justice of Pakistan Yahya Afridi approved the transfers on April 28.
The commission approved Justice Kayani’s transfer to the LHC, Justice Babar Sattar’s transfer to the Peshawar High Court (PHC) and Justice Saman Rafat Imtiaz’s transfer to the Sindh High Court (SHC) through a majority vote.
Born in February 1970, Justice Kayani practised law for several years before joining the judiciary. He also served as president of the Islamabad High Court Bar Association from 2014 to 2015.
He became an IHC judge in December 2015 and heard several significant and sensitive cases during his tenure at the court.
