Two sisters have been shot dead by their brother over their use of social media in Karachi’s Drigh Road area, police said.
Korangi Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Fida Husain Janwari told a private news outlet on Wednesday that Sobia, 25 and Hira, 20, were killed inside their home in New Rehmanabad by their brother, Rehan, within the jurisdiction of Shah Faisal Colony police.
Janwari said that the initial investigation suggested that the suspect had warned his sisters against using TikTok, which investigators were examining as a possible motive for the killings.
The suspect fled after the shooting while police are working to arrest him, the SSP added. He also said that Rehan had a criminal record and had been arrested several times in connection with other cases.
Police shifted the sisters’ bodies to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) for medico-legal formalities.
In a separate incident, a watchman was killed and two labourers were injured when two armed men opened fire at an under-construction building on Nishtar Road in Karachi’s Garden area, police said.
According to Soldier Bazaar police, the assailants arrived on a motorcycle and fired at Jumani Square near Alibhai Auditorium, leaving three people critically injured.
The injured were taken to Civil Hospital Karachi, where Aslam, 30, who worked as the building’s watchman, was pronounced dead on arrival.
The two injured labourers were identified as Shahid Ali, 25, and Shakir Ali, 28.
Police said that the shooting appeared to be linked to extortion. No further details about the suspects or arrests were provided in the information available.
