A 30-year-old man in Karachi was allegedly shot dead after being mistaken for a jinn because of the sounds he was making at night.
According to officials, the suspect, identified as Shafiullah son of Shireen Zada, was arrested during a raid in the Qasba Dhai Number area. Officers had gone to the area to take him into custody when an exchange of fire took place, leaving the suspect injured.
Police said Shafiullah was wanted in connection with the killing of Muhammad Shah near Chatti Hotel in Qasba Colony two days earlier.
During initial questioning, the suspect allegedly confessed to the shooting. He told investigators that Shah had been making unusual sounds during the night, which frightened him, and he believed the victim was a jinn.
West Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Tariq Elahi Mastoee said police recovered a firearm, spent bullet casings and other items from the suspect.
The injured suspect was taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for treatment and will face further legal proceedings, police said.
They added that the suspect had a previous criminal record, although they did not provide details of his past cases.
Further investigation into the circumstances of the killing and the suspect’s alleged role is underway.
